Selamatan for Usaha Dharma (United Dharma)

On Sunday the 1st of April a Selamatan for the launching of Usaha Dharma was held in Pak Soetriman’s house, which is now their base in Kalimantan. Usaha Dharma has been set up by a group of 23 Subud members (mostly from Java) who wish to commit to supporting Bapak’s vision for enterprise in Kalimantan. This company can accommodate most enterprise projects that members might wish to set up in Kalimantan. They have decided that they wish to begin by focusing on the village of Sei Gohong and surrounding area. Recently regular latihans have been established in the village where there are a number of Subud members. Harris Roberts who is the Director of Corp. Governance of Usaha Dharma has been instrumental in this. Though many residents were away for the Easter holidays, around 30 members were present from Jakarta, Rungan Sari and the surrounding villages.

YTS article in Jakarta Globe

Sumali Agrawal from YTS participated in an extensive article on the problems of mercury and the gold miner…….” mercury contamination is already widespread in Kalimantan and Sulawesi, as well as other islands, including Java. Small-scale gold mining is by far the greatest cause of mercury emissions in Indonesia. Even in Bogor, near Jakarta, 17,000 kilograms of mercury are emitted by gold processors every year. In Central Kalimantan, over 50,000 kilograms are emitted into the environment each year in one location alone.

to read the full article click here Mercury YTS doc.

YTS is the foundation, set up by KGC ‘our’ mining exploration company, to follow up the work initiated by Mansur Geiger and Murry Clapham back in the very first years of exploration. This work with the local communities began with the Kalimantan Kids Club which sponsored children from the villages for higher education in Palangka Raya. From working with 5 villages it has now grown to work with 31 under the governance of Bardolf Paul who arrived in 2004. YTS has become a major player in Development and Sustainable Governance at the local and regional level.

RIVER BOAT by Cedar Barstow

….boarding the boat….so much to see…Indonesian river worldwater–deep, thick, chocolate brown…..flowing slowly and inevitably south to the ocean….every inch of river ban…..a platform for housing…..three or four layers deep….thin, rough hewn, wooden planks….attached vertically or horizontally….over minimal framework….of wooden posts and poles…..all on stilts burrowed into the riverbed…….To read the rest of Cedar’s poem, click on link below
